Can We Meet?
Malaysia-Japan Video Art Exchange 2010
20 July – 6 Aug 2010
Galeri Reka, Balai Seni Lukis Negara
Video is a part of our everyday lives more than ever before. Life is captured on screen and experienced through computers, mobile phones, TV, cinema or even projection on buildings. As a medium, video profoundly affects the way we view reality
As part of Malaysia-Japan Video Art Exchange 2010, this exhibition brings together video works from Malaysian and Japanese artists. What is the meaning of ‘distance’ when video can instantly show us people and places from around the world? In the spaces between video screens, this collaboration asks the question: where and how can we meet?

MJVAX – Malaysia-Japan Video Art Exchange
~Video as a fighting tool~
THE SEVEN SAMURAI ARE COMING TO MALAYSIA!
Malaysia-Japan Video Art Exchange (MJVAX) is a collaboration of video artists from Malaysia and Japan. Five young Japanese Video Artists will participate in events in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang from 21 July to 3 August with two senior organizers/video art practitioners. Hosting them are well-known Malaysian artists namely, Hasnul J Saidon, Kamal Sabran, Kok Siew Wai, Masnoor Ramli, Nur Hanim Khairuddin and Sharon Chin. The programme will explore the potential of video as a form of self-expression and self-empowerment. In other words: video as a fighting tool.
The Activities & Schedule
Exhibition, Screenings, Talks, Presentations, Workshops and performances will be organized while the Japanese artists are here. Please check the attached schedule for more details.
* The schedule is subject to change.
The History
MJVAX is the brainchild of Mohd Naguib Razak, Hasnul J Saidon, Hiraoki Sato and Katsuyuki Hattori. Together they represent decades-long experience in the fields of media, video, art and education in Japan and Malaysia. This project is a result of their long-standing personal and professional relationships.
MJVAX is significant as the first of its kind to highlight the importance of video in our social-cultural landscape dominated by high technology and instant connectivity.
Creating a strong link with Japan – a nation at the forefront of video technology and discourse – will elevate Malaysia’s understanding of the past, present and future of video as a powerful new media.
MJVAX is divided into TWO sessions. SESSION ONE was hosted by Japan, taking place in Tokyo and Fukuoka from 26 Sept –13 Oct 2009. 5 Malaysian artists traveled to Japan and participated in workshops, screenings, lectures and a live performance.
MJVAX SESSION ONE created a great impact on the Japanese art community. A solid foundation for further exchange amongst Japanese and Malaysian video artists has been laid. This success has inspired us to forge ahead with MJVAX SESSION TWO, which will be hosted by Malaysia from 21 July to 3 August 2010.
