The images by award winning photographer, Nirmala Karuppiah,  in this segment of  CAPTURING TWILIGHT presents the foundation for her continuing exploration and tribute to  ancient dance forms  Makyong and Chinese Opera, both an integral part of Malaysia’s heritage and both challenged for survival.

Karuppiah was fortunate to capture the last traditional healing occasion,  conducted for  senior Makyong prima-donna, Mek Sapiah, and her last dance.     She  has followed Master  Elizabeth Choy Yim Heong, a leading and senior prima-donna  (77 years old)  through recent performances of  Malaysian Canto Opera and into her home/sanctuary.

The initial experience with Master Choy is captured in these images.  Karuppiah  was captivated with the prima-donna and troupe during  Hungry Ghost Festival performances.   Karuppiah, mesmerised by stage preparation,  captured moments of artistic intensity behind the curtain.

Karuppiah has recently scripted and unveils for the first viewing  a 6 minute art film that is the first of a series of three, showing  her impressions  and documentation of this Diva.

Karuppiah’s images  capture the fluidity of the dances and drama,  in various literal and semi-abstract guises.  Capturing Twilight   shares with us  characters, intensity and also  soft rhythms and harmonies of these declining arts.   It is also a personal  tribute to Master Elizabeth Choy Yim Heong and  the late Mek Sapiah , and members of these performing arts, for their dedication and strength in keeping history and legacy alive.

The exhibition is a collaboration between Shalini Ganendra Fine Art’s ART FOR YOU program and LONE PINES and E&O Hotels, Penang,   bringing great art to wider audiences.
