Richard Koh Fine Art Singapore is proud to present Black Banquet, the first solo exhibition in a commercial gallery by Singaporean artist Yeo Chee Kiong. Black Banquet is a site-specific installation work by Singapore visual artist, Yeo Chee Kiong, winner of the APB Foundation Signature Art Prize in 2008.
Yeo Chee Kiong’s interest in the function of everyday objects is continued here as he recreates a dining room where people can gather together to talk about anything over a meal. However, is this really a dining room and who and where are the guests? This focal point of the installation is a long table made out of 6 round Chinese antique tables, whose surface is no longer a receptacle for food and drink but is filled with water. The visual representation of a table is in conflict with the actual physical functionality of the actual object. It may look like a table, but if it cannot function as one, can it still be considered a table…
At the head of the table are 9 wigs set upon mirrored shelves. These wigs represent the people who would conventionally be seated around the table and each wig acts as a symbol of that person’s social status. These wigs face the “table” longingly as their function is also called into question if the table is no longer a table.
