Khoo Khay Tat – Equus
(A 50 year retrospective of Khoo Khay Tat’s work at Galeri Dunia Seni Lukis – 27th November to 15th December 2010)
Khoo Khay Tat has painted in his home town – Penang (where was born in1938) for fifty years.
He is a self taught artist who has presented Malay kampongs, nature, fishermen, trees, flowers and birds in stunning detail.
He has also become noted for his evocative, yet sensitive, renderings of buildings, especially in his light, airy, watercolour creations which at once capture reality as it is presented but also hint at a re-captured past forever encapsulated in his watercolour wash techniques.
Many of his later oil canvases have revealed the artist’s love of horses, especially through images of thundering thoroughbred mounts naturalistic and fantastic, giving praise to all things equine, as can be seen in this, his latest exhibition at Galeri Dunia Seni Lukis.
Over five decades Khoo Khay Tat has developed his artistic ability, formulated it to captivate as well as sooth his audience. In this retrospective exhibition, coinciding with the artist’s seventy second birthday, he allows his gallery audience to luxuriate in a collection of some of his very best equine works, with a small sample of his other works and some of the artworks which inspire him.
