Independent Malaysian news site The Nut Graph (TNG) is proud to feature Yayasan Tuanku Nur Zahirah chairperson Suryani Alias, Veritas Architects principal Lillian Tay and Royal Selangor Pewter general manager Yong Yoon Li in its last installment of “Found in Conversation” (FiC), a public talks project that links people, ideas and personalities.

The talk on “Creativity and Innovation in Design” will begin with a networking session at 6.00pm on 14 November at Leonardo’s Dining Room & Wine Loft in Bangsar, followed by the talk hosted by TNG Editor Jacqueline Ann Surin. Cover charges are RM30 with refreshments or RM45 inclusive of refreshments and a copy of “Shape of a Pocket” authored by Surin. Suryani Alias is the chairperson of the Tuanku Nur Zahirah Foundation which, under the Queen’s patronage, aims to revive songket and improve the lives of the weavers by ensuring they are fairly paid for their craft. A trained lawyer with an MA from the London School of Economics, Suryani has worked in Singapore, London and the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. She is passionate about art, heritage and culture and has benefitted widely from her travels and her exposure in other countries in this area. She is also Khazanah Nasional senior vice-president and a director of Think City, Penang which is involved in rejuvenating the Unesco world heritage site of George Town.

Lillian Tay was trained as an architect and an engineer at Princeton University and is now in her 15th year as a principal at Veritas Design Group. She has led the design and implementation of many of the firm’s most challenging and prestigious projects, resulting in many-award winning projects for the company. Some of the notable buildings Veritas has designed are the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; One Sentral, Kuala Lumpur; the Digi headquarters; and Universiti Teknologi Petronas. Lillian has also worked with Kumpulan Akitek, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in New York, OM Ungers & Partners in West Germany, and Robert Magris Architect and Industrial Designer in Florence, Italy.

Yong Yoon Li is General Manager for Royal Selangor International and is responsible for design, manufacturing and marketing. His other experiences lie in the motorsports and automotive industry. With experience as a design engineer in Formula One with Team Lotus International and Nissan Motorsports both in the United Kingdom, he returned to start up TVR Sports Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a boutique sports car manufacturer. Yoon Li has held various positions on the board of the Entrepreneurs’ Organisation in Malaysia and currently holds an international position as Area Director. He holds a Masters in Engineering from the Manufacturing Engineering School at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, including an MBA from IMD, Lausanne Switzerland.
