‘Inconsequential Consequence of Hope’ Marvin Chan’s first solo exhibition features paintings which reflect the effect of hope on life. Through his desire to have children as a natural progression after marriage, the  artist discovered that he was faced with a myriad of haunting questions that made him re-look the real reasons why he wanted children and whether he was ready to shoulder the responsibility. Were his hopes too high?

The idea in itself changed the way he looked at and lived his life and also altered the way he worked.

In his own words:

The idea of having a child lead us through a process of discovery and of change, even without it coming to fruition. It changed my work.

It was through this process of self-discovery that he realized that his works were a true reflection of how his mind worked to piece things together.

What I thought was an accidental discovery(painting without my glasses for a month) actually revealed how I worked to piece things together. I triangulate marks to locate and render an image.

The works are thus images which represent the constant negotiation between the artist and his life where he strikes to find a balance between one’s expectations and one’s reality.
