Images of war and fighting fishes: Nur Hanim Khairuddin’s installation for Bakat Muda Sezaman 2002 titled, Laga-laga

Unless you’re living in the thick of the woods, or you do not actually own a facebook account, you might’ve probably learned from the grapevine that Bakat Muda Sezaman is making a come back this year. What is Bakat Muda Sezaman, you might ask? For those of you who are weaned off contemporary art only in the past five years, it’s no surprise that the BMS doesn’t ring a bell, for it has gone into hiatus since 2006.

To put it simply, Bakat Muda Sezaman is an art competition organised biennially by Balai Seni Lukis Negara (National Art Gallery). Now long before international curators started picking our conceptual artists to show around the world since the nineties or how those with no inclination of selling paintings to sustain their practice now find a new set of audience from the internet today, the BMS was THE PLATFORM where young artists are given the opportunity to showcase what they are capable of. Since its inception in 1974, it was the arena where young guns strut their stuff and pitted their radical ideas about what art can be against one another for a coveted prize that bought both fame and money.

Perhaps it was due the two reasons mentioned above, the significance, popularity and relevance of the prize went into decline from the Nineties onwards until it sputtered to a halt after its lacklustre 2006 edition. Four years have since passed and we’re excited to hear that Bakat Muda Sezaman is back on Balai’s agenda. Divesting itself as the monolithic fuddy duddy instiution, Balai’s set of younger curators have actually taken to facebook for opinions on the direction in which the BMS should be heading.

And we wanna help! The question asked is, ‘Should the Bakat Muda Sezaman have a theme?’ Do you think artists should compete against each other based on a selected theme or does this actually limit the scope of one’s creativity? What other considerations should be taken into organising this year’s Bakat Muda Sezaman?

Let’s figure this out together.

Healthy competition is good but we must never forget we are all on the same theme.

Lets hope Balai Seni Lukis does get enough money and wont be funding it hard to make ends meet.

All I am really hoping is that Balai is compete-tent enough to pull this off.

I always love going to see the Bakat Muda exhibition. Sometimes I’m disappointed but that’s not relevant. There’s always a lot of stimulation in the exhibition & what I personally find exciting is the opportunity to see work from people I’ve never heard of or seen before.

I do hope this new edition will be embraced by all and sundry to make it the exciting exhibition it has always had the potential to be.

Bakat Muda when embraced by all of us can be a seriously important marker in our arts landscape.

Go Bakat Muda! All power to ya!

IF THE RULES OF GAME STILL REMAINED THE SAME AS PREVIOUSLY, APA YANG TIDAK AKAN BERUBAH IALAH, PROBLEM-PROBLEM LAMA SEPERTI WE FINALLY HAVE THE WINNERS BUT NOT THE BEST YOUNG CONTEMPORARIES, BAHPUN ADA PULAK SENIMAN MUDA YANG KALAH AKAN MEMBERI KRITIKAN SEPERTI SESI PENGHAKIMAN TIDAK ADIL, HAKIM ITU BODOH…AS WE NOTICED THAT, THERE WERE MANY JUDGES, AT LEAST 5 OF THEM, BUT THEY ALWAYS MADE THEIR DECISION SEPARATELY AND WITHOUT PERBINCANGAN YANG MEMDALAM, SIGNIFICANT AND UNCHALLENGEABLE.
IF THE RULES OF GAME STILL REMAINED THE SAME, KITA MEMANG ADA PEMENANG BMS, TETAPI MEREKALAH YANG AKAN MENGHILANG DIRINYA DARI ARENA CONTEMPORARY ART JUST OVER NIGHT, I ASSUMED!
