Malaysia, given what our country professed to be (chiefly a democratic state that adheres to a constitutional monarchy), seems like an unlikely location for an international arts festival that celebrates the glory of an autocratic state. But the organisers of the 3rd Pyongyang International Arts Festival in Kuala Lumpur beg to differ, seeing that despite Malaysia’s already rich and vibrant multi-cultural communities elbowing for enough space for themselves, there is always room for more, particularly the Democratic People’s Republic brand of totalitarianism packaged for the latter-day Malaysian capitalists.
Here we feature a special roundtable discussion with organisers, which took place at the Pyongyang Restaurant off Jalan Ampang. The 3rd Pyongyang International Arts Festival in Kuala Lumpur will take place on 5 June 2010, 8.30PM in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
