‘Mana permit? Malaysia sudah aman, kenapa perlu mesej keamanan lagi?’ – Police officer
‘Where is your permit? Malaysia is already a peaceful country, why do you need to promote peace?’ – Police officer
Eighth church attacked as we write. To neutralise this atmosphere of mistrust and hate, the young people of Kuala Lumpur decided to stage a rally tomorrow by distributing flowers to the public at a busy intersection in town, noon last Saturday. As flowers are handed out to random passerby, a message of reassurance is imparted, ‘everything is gonna be alright’ – a fashion of plain speaking that attempts at some level to reclaim what politicians are wont to do, assuring us in times where the social fabric is torn by an aggressive minority, that essentially everything is a-okay. This time however, we hear it from people to people. Flowers are after all, in our modern world, one of the most pregnant symbol of gift giving and generosity. In many ways, a sermon of kindness. Here are some photographs of Saturday’s event taken by numerous participants.

Idea behind EVERYTHING’S GONNA BE ALRIGHT (apologies to Martin Creed)
Here’s to let you in on how this all came about. On Monday, 4 Jan 2010, Simon, Dill, Munkao and I sat about lazily looking at an art book in MERAH. We came by Martin Creed’s ‘Everything Is Going To Be Alright’ neon installation and my first reaction was ‘Omigod, I must rip that off’ (the idea, not the page containing the image).
Then the shit hit the fan…
I can’t think of a better time to start
