What’s an event without official endorsement these days?

Art Expo held it’s VIP Preview Night on Wed, 18 Nov 2009. The guest of honour was Datuk Mukhriz bin Tun Dr. Mahathir, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry.

I learned a few things from the VIP speech. Scroll down to know what!

‘Salam 1Malaysia’ is now common parlance amongst government officials.

Commercial galleries are now considered part of the much hallowed ‘services industry’. Hooray. In March this year, MATRADE partnered with Balai Seni Lukis Negara to sponsor 5 Malaysian galleries at the Malaysian Services Exhibition in Dubai. The 5 were: Art Seni Gallery, RA Fine Arts, Galeri Chandan, City Art Gallery and ESPI Art Gallery. (L – R: Dato’ Mohammed bin Mohd Daud from Ministry of Culture, Info and Unity, Datuk Mukhriz Mahatir and Art Expo’s driving force, Mr. Vincent Sim)

A painting by Abdul Rashid – Art Expo’s present to Datuk Mukhriz. Tis’ such a calming, pastoral scene. BSLN’s token was Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal’s phonebook-sized catalog of the exhibition that’s currently showing at Balai. (Which btw, everyone should go and see)

Obviously a very thorough walkthrough, because they eventually reached ARTERI’s booth. Beforehand, someone urged us to put away our wine glasses and ARTERI’s advertisement showing a video still from the anti-ISA march. But we do not heed such silliness.

V.I. Pee – that’s how you know Someone’s about to arrive. When they bring out The Sign.

I have been rudely pushed away twice by the body guards of our royalties during opening events when they were coming through to look at the artworks. Instead of asking politely for us to make way, which i would have gladly complied, all these ‘little napoleons’ who are drunk with the little power they wield, choose instead to display what little and irrelevant authority they have by treating the general public very unkindly. it is very unbecoming. Especially when you would think that art exhibitions generally reflect the high points of a nation’s civilisation (at least state-sponsored or institutionalised ones). Unfortunately, I don’t think our VIPs are aware of the extent of this kind of impudence shown by their staffs towards the public.

Everyone, try pushing the body guards back or fake falling then tumbling into the exhibits, then make a fuss in front of the vipees. So drama.

Actually, I destroyed a four thousand Aussie dollar installation before during the opening night. -simon
