I realised that my basic knowledge was a bit off when I forgot how many letters there were in the alphabet. All those years of Sesame Street gone to waste! 26! 26! It’s so obvious yet I forgot.

This slip-up propelled my thoughts lovingly to my  dictionary. A bit sad but I love dictionaries, and I have lots: a French one, English one, Bahasa one, Latin one. Yes, am a geek.  So I was sure that there was an art dictionary; all those glossaries in all those standard survey books must have been compiled, right? Yes, yes, they have — and here are some online examples:

ArtLex;

GalleryDirectArt’s Art Dictionary;

and ArtBLAH

but they are rather dull and painfully boring.

So I thought we could come up with our own Malaysian version, just for fun, and ask you guys to add to it in the comments box. That means whatever vaguely arty-related words that begin with “A” that you want to define, you add! Know an important artist, sadly unrepresented? An above-ground counter-counterculture movement? Want to pimp your own projects?

Then at the end, we have our own mass-generated dictionary. Just what the world needs, right? (Its hardly an academic affair but we need to entertain ourselves, okay?) And best of all, it’s incomplete — so there is always room for new urgent additions that pop into the brain at 2am in the morning.

So stay tuned for the letter “A” day after tomorrow, folks. Can you all say “A”?

Guess whose favourite online blogazine will be in that one??

    From my miserable layperson’s understanding of such techy things, I think this project would be well suited to a ‘wiki’. Can someone more clued in than I say if this is easy to do within a blogozine format?

    Btw, link to Sesame Street alphabet pic here: http://imagecache5.art.com/p/LRG/15/1576/MTMDD00Z/sesame-street-alphabet.jpg

    And for those who have trouble with their alpha-betas here’s Patti La Belle rockin’ out with the Sesame gang: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlFqhHJczDs&feature=related
