Kudos to the House of MATAHATI (HOM) & Galeri Chandan for initiating a new art award that is aimed at recognising emerging talent. Presented in collaboration with Soka Gakkai Malaysia, the inaugural Matahati Malaysian Emerging Artists Award couldn’t come at a better time in a local scene that needs to provide more recognition opportunities that can help our younger artists gain greater exposure for their practice.

The competition is open to all Malaysians age between 18 to 35 years old and the prizes seem lucrative enough! A total of Five (5) winners will be selected from shortlisted submissions with each winning the following prizes:

A Cash prize of RM3,000
A Voucher for Art Supplies worth RM2,000
A 10-day Travel Grant to Yogyakarta, Indonesia and
A solo exhibition for each artists in Malaysia

One big boo-boo about the award is that it does not recognise new media or installation-based practice. One of the criteria states, ‘all works must be designed to hang on the wall’. A rather narrow idea of what art can be, isn’t it? The cynical side of us sometimes wonder if this award is solely created to recognise and promote a very narrow industry-driven kind of idea of what art should be. What about performance? Internet art? Conceptual practice? Don’t we need to recognise these as valid and important areas of contemporary art that enrich our art thinking too?

Strangely enough, for an industry award that is aimed at recognising new talent, students are not encouraged to participate. Nonetheless, it’s still a great opportunity for many aspiring artists. Winning the bragging rights to stage one’s own solo exhibition is no small feat. So what are you waiting for???

Funny, I thought Matahati made a name for breaking from the dominant abstract art world and making edgy social-expressionistic works of art in the 80s and 90s. I’m sure they did plenty of installations and dabbled in new media before. Maybe the edge has been lost after they appeared in Tattler wearing corporate ‘hitmen’ suits.

Can the gallery or Matahati explain briefly this limitation? Is it strictly logistical or is there an ideological reason behind it?

    Zonk,

I’m looking at this from two angles. Firstly, I agree with you that the restrictions are somewhat strange and unexpected. However, on second thoughts, wouldn’t it be a good platform for young artists inclined towards more conventional modes of art making to showcase their works?

Still, I have to say that the gallery and Matahati may provide better insight to the limitations….

If this art award happened in 1970’s that will ok lah,but now was year 2009,so it sound-
absolutely out dated and old school.
can it be organise in more creatively?
come on..this is a creative industry!!!
We make our name(GLORY) and money(SUCCESS)from creativity!

the question remains, can the market keep up with creativity? or does it bend the creative industry to its will?

Oh well… maybe being creative means being able to express yourself or communicate ideas brilliantly regardless of the limitations that are imposed.

So long as no one claims what most artists do in the current art scene as ‘modern’ or ‘contemporary’, I guess such retroactive practices are okay. Such brakes may be even be necessary since the world is moving so fast these days. Going back to 2D and 3D could be signs that we want to slow down and reflect on life more.

Let the rest of the world and the people at our Multimedia Supercoridor have their newfangled gadgets and installations. New media kids have Astro and other corporate money to pull them in. RM3,000 is not going to mean much for young graduates with capable digital animation, video editing, or photoshopping skills in the current market. Ah but for the romantic types, the posibility of gaining a modicum sum just to cover their monthly cigarettes and canvas cost plus the possibility for personal fame and glory all they need to feed their hati.

I’m just worried that sometimes computer program are producing visuals with more ‘soul’ than what most artists can:

so much to complain lah! make your own art award lah, choose your fav category and select yourself as champion lah, haiya! sikit sikit mau komplen, buat salah – tak buat pun salah.. boriiiiiiiiing

Aku s’tju ngan Loser. Satu usaha baik yang patut dipermuliakan sebaliknya hanya ditekankan kekurangannya. Tak hairanlah ‘art scene’ ini hanya berkembang dalam arus satu lingkaran sempit – mulut kejar buntut.

Kritik superficial Loser kepada saya berbunyi macam ahli politik kami yang meminta rakyat yang tidak berpuas hati to go back or leave this country.

If you only want to hear and see only nice things, you’ll never know how beautiful buntuts can be too. Hearing opposing views is how we can expand our thinking and make improvements.

Kalau benar-benar ingin memajukan art scene, i suggest hotgeek, loser, atau lain-lain menulis satu komentar yang memberi counter-arguement kepada kritikan yang mereka tidak bersetuju.

Having someone praising someone who is complaining about people complaining…wow, can we have more sophisticated opinions please?

Want to push boundaries, there’s your boundary. Push it.

‘all works must be designed to hang on the wall’; 2D or 3D. Don’t just mean paintings. Can be interpreted in many ways.

‘What about performance? Internet art? Conceptual practice? Don’t we need to recognise these as valid and important areas of contemporary art that enrich our art thinking too?’ – arteri

    ‘no installations’ – organizers

To counter such limitations you can say:
    – oh, a picture of an installtion or environmental/urban art will do loh
    – aiyoh, do an installation disguised as a 3D work can?
    – haiya just install a flatscreen TV or computer to screen your new media worklah

Perhaps such methods can be considered ‘creative’ and ‘pushing boundaries’ but do we want to encourage our youths to always find loophools in the rules and regulations of society?

I think it’s pretty fun to hack the system and in certain circumstances it is necessary. In this case, I’m think that the organisers could have been more openly encouraging of creativity and progressive culture amongst youths by making the media ‘open’ and studying as many kinds of entries as possible.

Is there any news of who the jury would be?

    withmeoragainstmeoronme,
apa yang anda katakan adalah exactly sama sahaja dengan apa yang anda nyatakan sebagai:

“Kritik superficial Loser kepada saya berbunyi macam ahli politik kami yang meminta rakyat yang tidak berpuas hati to go back or leave this country.”

Why is there an age limit of 35? Doesn’t “emerging” mean emerging as an artist and should not be restricted to 35 years since emerging from the womb? Whether an artist is 5 or 65 they should be entitled to enter such a competition as long as they are new artists.

why cant art students enter this award, it is supposed to be a platform for us right?? i know they say not encourage but usually that is the same as cannot haha
