Yee I-Lann describes Anak Negeri (2007) as a family portrait.
1. Parents, partner, family, friends and my furry ones
Bless ’em, each and every one.
2. History
Never-ending supply of drama, intrigue, lust, trivia, humour, and greed. Gripping stuff. History also helps me to understand why things are the way they are and how to address the here and now.
3. The horizon line
The horizon line is the blank slate for me. Like meditation. Whatever I’m dealing with at the time, I try and kinda project this on a conceptual horizon and I imagine getting some kind of perspective over whatever I’m dealing with. Of course the horizon keeps moving, it’s a tease, which is fine, as it also indulges my fickle and somewhat contradictory and indecisive nature.
4. Road holidays
A long road trip with an esky of good food in the back. Ideally the road trip comes with camping, fires, outdoor cooking and staring into a universe of stars. Helps you think.
5. Red wine, also Hendrick’s Gin with limau purut
Sometimes a bit tooo inspiring, also tends to be short lived and forgotten soon after.
8. Malaysian politics
Self explanatory. Not sure if I should tell you what it inspires though.
9. The Street
Here’s where it’s at. Listen, watch and learn.

Yee I-Lann (born 1971, Sabah, Malaysia) received her BA in Visual Arts from the University of South Australia, Adelaide and studied painting at Central St. Martins School of Arts in London. In 2003, she exhibited Horizon, a series of digitally manipulated photographs developed during a residency sponsored by the Australian High Commission Kuala Lumpur at Gunnery studios, Sydney. I-Lann’s visual vocabulary is extensive—drawn from popular culture, urban landscapes and everyday objects. She handles this vocabulary with a deft virtuosity, skipping across traditional and invented media to create work that is at once poignant, poetic, nostalgic, humorous and engaged. In 1999, I-Lann was selected for the 3rd Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane, Australia.
