A Contemporary Dance Drama – The Eternal Wife

Nitya Sumangali depicts the devadasi tradition and the forbidden love of a young devadasi. The contemporary dance drama is set in a 6th century Shiva temple. During this period, in some parts of India, young girls were sent to temples as servants and made the wives of God and called Devadasi. These wives of God lived in or around the temple compounds to serve the deity as dancers and musicians forming part of the elaborate rituals. Due to circumstances, they fall into a cruel fate as an eternal wife of God, following tradition-even in death.

Nitya Sumangali challenges creativity on every front – from choreography to costume, set design to sound and light and features the deconstruction of classical and contemporary dances.
