Ruzzeki  Harris, a former student of mine since the days of my tutelage has the charisma and the nonchalant attributes of a creator/artist. In his second solo exhibition, the characteristics of his creation took me quite a surprise seeing this person has grown up in his artistic endeavors and now as a colleague teaching in UiTM  Perak.
Social interpretation seems to be the natural reaction in today art scene especially in Malaysia. The foundation of imagery comes from multiple resources residing in every corner, from the local scenario till the images from billboards, television, the multi media and cutting edge visual references and readings. It is not surprising even me not be able to elude into this world of fragmented imagery created by the nuances of high-tech visualization machinery and the ever expanding usage of image based telecommunication.
Harold Rosenberg published a famous essay about Abstract Expressionism in 1952 called “The American Action Painters”. In it he proposed an Existential account of the movement. He said the canvas wasn’t a canvas any more. Instead it was an arena in which to act. The painting wasn’t a painting anymore but an action and the act was the thing next to aesthetics. In this era a new world order of brands of imagery has been established by the act of advertisement, brand positioning, the corporate culture and the ever changing and growing new media.  Existentialism in this case are also adapting itself which incorporates itself to a natural reaction of creating multiple, fragmented or disjointed kind of imagery. Abstraction becomes design and image becomes art. In general, contemporary art now, the way Modern art is part glamour and part show biz, a bit glitzy creating vivid impressions to make up the new ideal image of Modern art.
In the world of Ruzzeki darndest imagery are bit on the eccentric side and sometimes out of this world. His ethos of conjuring images fusing his initial reaction towards what is happening today and what is going on in his mind. Myth, illusion or self –consciously making things up through left-over industrial materials, characters from clowns, superheroes to Michelangelo’s  and parodies for him are plug and play.

In his own words he professed his ideas are of constant pondering towards events, tragedies and social stigmas. Human characters are his main concern punctuating as a central focus in his works and laden with graphic and text to accentuate the underlying meaning such as Sweet Promises, Puppet Master, Forbidden Lovers and Black Gold.
In art there are a lot of things to do and this creates anxiety. Anxiety about cleverness connects to anxiety about the spiritual. Illusion and delusion is part of his ideas and he is playing with it. Anxiety negates rationality but leans towards spirituality. Today the spiritual often equates with mysticism. Popular culture loves mysticism but it is intellectually despised. But it is wrong to think like that. Art changes all the time and it is fundamental to its nature for it to do that.
Alas for Ruzzeki the trip to success is still a long winding road. But in the world of making art, success can be achieved in so many marvelous ways besides having commercial success. The road trip he is taking is the journey of his own destiny created through desire and by self aspiration. Adapting and re creating is needed because art is getting more and more relaxed into everything else because everything else is changing and there is no centre of certainty or centre of official ideas that everyone must obey. As to put in a perspective, new ideas are everyone’s domain now, not just art’s.
