Hello, just want to comment on the music of Erik Satie : Gnossienne N.1. in chi too’s photo-essay. Erik Satie’s music is in a way very “photogenic”, just like Bach’s music. European documentaries just love to use Satie and Bach’s music to accompany the narrative. Thus, I find it a bit cliché and indigestible to mix up Satie’s famous piano piece and the voice-over.

Actually,if we look how the narrative is constructed, which is really poking fun at the genre of photo-essay by using a voice-over taking us through mundane holiday photos, then the use of Satie’s cliche and over-rated Gnossienne N.1 makes sense as it is part of the artist’s intention to parody muscial accompaniment in this kind of narrative.

How often do we see this type of photographs being taken in this manner for artsy effect? so common la. just go on to blogs and flickr and you’re inundated with an endless stream of over-emo and cheap sentimental attempts at making even the most ordinary of experience ‘super meaningfully’.

Chi Too, I think, is deconstructing this style of photography where the photographer often tries very hard to create a very solemn and overly sentimental mood – this is what that is truly cliche and boring.

these days like, so many pple deconstruct stuff into an intellectual context, all their pictures/works, pretty or ugly, common or not.

I find the exercise of deconstructing to be abit cliched also.

These days more and more people like to criticise others for deconstructing genres, and say that it is cliche. I find this exercise of complaining and criticising the exercise of deconstructing without offering any interesting alternative other than an anti-intellectual swipe even MORE cliche.
