Calling all young Malaysian artists!

The House of Matahati (HOM) artist residency programme is now open for application. Started in 2008 as a studio mentorship programme by the MATAHATI boys, the residency has since become a significant stepping stone, where regular guidance from Malaysia’s prominent art stars have helped shape the direction and career of our artistic fledglings.

Besides providing a proper studio space for young artists to work in and a monthly travel allowance, they also offer a number of activities such as talks and studio visits to give selected artists a head start in and a knowhow of the local art scene.

Discipline obviously counts in terms of regular attendance! And the residency’s emphasis on practice and dialogue is aimed at nurturing an all-rounder artist who is both technically proficient and conceptually engaged. As such, constant interaction between residents and their MATAHATI mentors as well as guest artists afford exposure and constructive criticism, ingredients vital to creative development.

And at the end of it all, artists will get to present their new body of work to the public in an exhibition, which is fast becoming a much anticipated highlight in the Malaysian art calendar!

Interested parties are asked to submit CV and portfolio to houseofmatahati AT gmail DOT com or call MiMie at 012-3736004 for more information.

This round’s deadline is 30 October 2009. So pull yourself together already!
Past artists in residence include:

1. Azam Haris (1983) / B.A in Fine Art UiTM Shah Alam 2007

House of MATAHATI (HOM) is an independent art space consists of a gallery and studio facilities, located in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. Established in 2007, it is an artist-run initiative to provide a venue for events conducive to the development of local and regional art activities. One of HOM’s core objectives is to promote and nurture emerging artists through its MATAHATI Art Residency programme. Besides supporting home-grown talents, HOM facilitates networking amongst its Southeast Asian counterparts through dialogues or joint-venture programmes, such as organising the annual ‘Artriangle’ exhibition, which invites artists from neighbouring countries to showcase their artworks in a major group show.

HOM is funded and run by MATAHATI, a collective which was founded in 1993 by five Malaysian artists; Ahmad Fuad Osman, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Masnoor Ramli Mahmud and Hamir Soib @Mohamed. A familiar name in the Malaysian art scene, the MATAHATI group found recognition and success via its collaborative artistic practice as a group as well as individually.
