From blackness there was more darkness

Posted by on Wednesday, 6 May, 2009 at 1:22 AM. Filed under: News

Political analyst Wong Chin Huat has just been detained under the Internal Security Act Sedition Act,  for his writing and for initiating the 1Black Malaysia campaign. The aim of the campaign was to get all Malaysians to wear black on 7 May, in protest against Barisan National’s apparently unconstitutional take-over of the Perak state government.

ARTERI is a blog about art, not politics. But our posts have been anticipating darkness. Now is a good time to rethink the idea of black, of being in the dark: re-read our Thoughts on Darkness series:

01: Intro
02: Notes on the Subway
03: Darkness Descends
04: Seeing Light In the Dark
05: Metamorphosis
06: Writer’s Block
07: Balance
08: The Black Page in Tristram Shandy

It’s also a good time to think of light and hope: take part in the discussion on The Light Show. Better still, go and see the exhibition. We need light, in any form.

On behalf of ARTERI, I stand firm in support of freedom of expression, and say that there is nothing to fear from either blackness or darkness. I ask that Wong Chin Huat be charged formally in court, or else be released without further delay.

I propose a strategy of comedic and aesthetic activism:

    1) gatherers meet at Jalan Ipoh, KL.
    2) put on pink shirts.
    3) arrange themselves into a pair of giant lips.
    4) shout ‘WCH MALAYSIA LOVES YOU!’

Somehow, there is no coverage of this arrest AT ALL in any of the print media today.

Can any well-connected little birds out there tell us if there has been a media blackout on this?

Sharon, actually Chin Huat’s been arrested under the Sedition Act not the ISA. Hardly apposite to use the ISA now when its supposed to be “under review”. 2 others are believed to have been arrested this afternoon under the same act for participating in the delivery of a birthday cake from which 3 were already detained. PAS’s Mat Sabu has been arrested, presumably because he intended to lead mass prayers tomorrow in Ipoh.

Chin Huat’s arrest was covered in The Star, pg. 2, bottom section. NST, pg. 13.

Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) got balls.

Remember the yellow pillow with KLCCs, teddy bears and flags silk screened on it with a memorandum to Badawi to Wake Up delivered to his office at Putrajaya? And now the Altantuya birthday cake to PM.

    That’s ART!

[…] Darkness: noun, a state of no light actual or metaphorical, like right now, politically Malaysia is in a time of darkness. ARTERI has its own take on darkness here. […]
